Why Ferndale's Climate Is Tough on Decks

What composite doesn't do is eliminate moisture problems on its own. Capped vs. Uncapped Composite
Most composite boards on the market today are either fully capped (a polymer shell wraps the entire board) or capped on three sides, leaving the bottom or the cut ends exposed to the wood-plastic core. In a climate with this much sustained moisture, we favor fully capped boards for Ferndale installs whenever the budget allows. The core material in composite boards can still take on some moisture at exposed edges over time, and a fully capped board gives you one less place for that to start. Fasteners and Hardware

Correct gapping between boards lets water drain through rather than sheet across the surface and sit in low spots. We also think about board orientation relative to how water and foot traffic move across the deck, and where the moss and algae are most likely to establish given the amount of shade a particular area gets.

- Avoid pressure washing at close range or high PSI — it can etch or damage the cap layer on most composite boards
- Check railing posts, stair connections, and any metal hardware periodically for corrosion, especially on decks closer to the water
- Keep gutters and downspouts near the deck clear so runoff isn't dumping extra water onto or under the structure
- Trim back overhanging branches where practical to reduce shade and debris load on the deck surface
