Both are manufactured in Hardie's HZ5 climate-engineered formulation, which is built for the wet, moisture-heavy Pacific Northwest rather than a one-size-fits-all national spec. The factory-applied ColorPlus finish resists fading and doesn't require the on-site painting that raw board and batten (cedar, primed spruce) demands — which matters a lot given how much of the year Bellingham stays damp and how few good painting-weather windows we actually get.
Fiber cement is also non-combustible, holds paint and caulk lines far longer than wood, and doesn't warp, cup, or attract insects the way solid wood board and batten can over time.
Why Not Vinyl or Engineered Wood Board & Batten?
Vertical vinyl panels marketed as "board and batten style" are common and inexpensive, and engineered wood board and batten shows up in some newer builds. We don't install either. Vinyl expands and contracts significantly with temperature swings, which stresses the long vertical seams in this style more than it does horizontal lap siding, and it doesn't hold up to UV and impact the way fiber cement does. Engineered wood (OSB-based) siding is more moisture-sensitive at cut edges and seams — a real liability on a style with this many seams, in a climate with this much sustained dampness. These aren't defects so much as trade-offs we're not willing to build a wet-climate installation around.

Skipping or rushing any one of these steps is how you end up with board and batten siding that looks fine for a year or two and then starts showing staining, streaking, or soft spots at the seams — usually right where moss and shade have kept a wall damp the longest.
